Something Rotten!

Mar 03, 2023 to Mar 11, 2023

Book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell

Music and Lyrics by Wanye Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick

Conceived by Karey Kirkpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick

Directed by Jonathan Hadley

Location: E.C. Mabie Theatre

1595, London: Nick Bottom longs to write a hit play with his brother Nigel and break out of the shadow of The Bard. Hiring a soothsayer, Nick learns that the most fantastic thing that will ever grace the stage is something called “a musical!” When Nick desires more and more insight into what will make his show a success, and Nigel discovers a forbidden love, the brothers must discover the meaning of “to thine own self be true.” Something Rotten—the 2015 hit musical by Karey Kirkpatrick, Wayne Kirkpatrick, and John O’Farrell—combines Shakespeare and musical theatre to create a joyful, hilarious, tap-happy satire about authenticity and dreaming big in Renaissance England.

Please be advised that this performance includes haze, some strong language, and some sexual innuendos.
Also, please be advised that no bears, chickens, or eggs were harmed during the making of this show.

Domenico Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto

*Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Il matrimonio segreto premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 7 February 1792, just two months after Mozart’s death. It received immediate accolades, particularly from Emperor Leopold II, who commanded an encore performance of the entire opera that day for a private audience.

Adapted from stageagent.com:
Carolina and Paolino have been secretly married for two months and they are looking for the right time to tell Carolina’s father, Signor Geronimo, about their union. Paolino has a plan: As Geronimo’s secretary, he has been making arrangements for Carolina’s older sister, Elisetta, to marry the eminent Count Robinson (Il Conte Robinson). He is sure that when this marriage goes ahead, Geronimo, who is eager to have one of his daughters marry a titled nobleman, will be so pleased that they will be able to reveal their secret. Unfortunately, when the Count meets the sisters, he has other ideas. To add to the confusion, Geronimo’s sister Fidalma has her eye on Paolino!

This operatic farce to rival Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro sees all six characters getting into awkward situations or being caught in compromising positions until the truth finally must come out. Cimarosa’s excellent score bubbles along to Bertati’s hilarious libretto and makes this an excellent work for everyone to enjoy.

H.M.S. Pinafore

Set sail for hysterical hi-jinks on the high seas with Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved comedy of star-crossed lovers, mistaken identities, and madcap merriment. The captain’s daughter has caught the eye, and the heart, of two men: a lowly sailor and the pompous First Lord of the Admiralty himself. Will true love prevail? What long-held secret holds the key to happiness for all? This effervescent musical romp, overflowing with infectious tunes, jaunty dances, and hilarious characters, is a bitingly funny parody of class and society that truly makes a modern-day splash!

Wayne Wyman, conductor
Alex Arellano, assistant conductor (Sunday Matinée)
